Mary Hutson

Mary Claire Hutson (née Hummel)

July 2, 1940 – April 8, 2018

Mary was born almost 78 years ago to Ruth and William Hummel in St. Louis Missouri and went home to God on Sunday, April 8 with her family in attendance and fortified by the sacraments of the Church. The fifth of nine children, Mary attended Holy Rosary elementary school and Incarnate Word Academy. While she held a number of administrative positions during her 30-year career, Mary considered her most significant and meaningful position to be that of mother.

Mary is survived by her four greatly loved children: Ann Barton and Greg Barton, Wayne (Lisa) Hutson, Tammy (Brian) Loyal, and Paul (Pam) Hutson; by her 9 grandchildren (each and every one of whom is her favorite) Jake, Zack, Emily, Alex, Marissa, Jessica, Connor, Landon and Lindsay; and her 5 great-grandchildren Jude, Mason, Rylee Kay, Norah and Sunny. Mary was the daughter of the late William and Ruth Hummel (née Jarvis) and sister of the late Shirley (John) Rothermich and of Ginny (Bob) McGrellis, Bill (Jackie) Hummel, Carol/Pudge (Jim) Fritschie, Barbara (Tom) O’Mara, Joan Clear, John (Diana) Hummel and Kathy (Roger) Frillman. She was a loyal sister-in law, aunt, great aunt, cousin, and friend.

Well-known for her love of dogs, reading, gardening and conversation, Mary enjoyed good times with friends and family. She will be remembered for always embodying the meaning of the phrase “a friend in need is a friend indeed.” She liked to play cards and dominos and, following her retirement, joined several card clubs where she was appreciated equally for her joie de vivre and for her playing ability.

Mary served her parish communities in many capacities through the years, most recently at Holy Infant, where she worked in the office alongside her good friend Beata and volunteered her talent as a quilter with the parish quilting organization and as a sacristan with her good friend Marilyn.

Treasured by her kids, grandkids, brothers, sisters, and many friends, Mary will be greatly missed.

Visitation prior to memorial Mass on Thursday, April 12, 9:00 am at Holy Infant Catholic Church, 248 New Ballwin Road.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Holy Infant Catholic Church.

My deepest condolences to Mary’s family. I worked with Mary in the shoe department at JC Penney at Grandview Plaza. She was so much fun to work with and a wonderful person as well. Rest In Peace, friend.

My name is London. We haven’t met but after reading Ms. Mary’s obituary I felt impelled to share the comforting promise found at Isaiah 25:14:”[God] will swallow up death forever, and the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will wipe wipe away the tears from all faces.”

Death is such a terrible enemy, but one that we won’t have to face forever. Those who, like Ms. Mary, have already died, will be able to benefit from this promise too. Acts 24:15 says that “there will be a resurrection.”

Until that time, may “the God of all comfort” (2 Corinthians 1:3) supply you peace through this difficult time. Your family will be in my prayers.
