Jane Cochran Hughes

Jane Cochran Hughes, widow of Richard D’Oyly Hughes, Jr., died peacefully Wednesday, May 9, 2018 in her hometown of St. Louis, MO. Jane was born and raised in St Louis. She attended Mary Institute, graduated from the Masters School, Dobbs Ferry, NY and alumnae of Briarcliff College. In 1955, she served as the maid of honor at the Veiled Prophet Ball. A year later, she married Marine Corps Lt. Richard D’Oyly Hughes, Jr. of St. Louis, MO. They were stationed in Honolulu, HI. They lived for over 40 years in Lakeville, CT as part of the faculty community at The Hotchkiss School, before retiring to Saunderstown, RI.

Jane was dedicated to lifetime community service: particularly her leadership roles in fundraising for Sharon Hospital, and in volunteering at the county Animal Shelters in CT and RI.

Jane had a passion for traveling the world, which continued to the end of her life. She combined her personal passion with her vocation as a Travel Agent. Her career of 20 years started at the Herrick Travel Agency in Lakeville, CT and culminated in her creation of Alumni Travel Tours for Hotchkiss, Deerfield and Choate Schools. A notable highlight was her achieving the first American tourist group access to China in the early 1970’s. Her family can’t fail to mention, Jane’s enthusiasm and talent in sports, competitive bridge and mahjong. She delighted in the spirit of competition; particularly the camaraderie and deep friendships formed from these interests.

Jane genuinely appreciated and recognized the finest qualities in each person that came into her life. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Among those are her sister, Ann McCandless, her two daughters, Anne H. Dor of Kirkland, WA, and Kristen H. Lilly of Hull, MA; her son, Guy D’Oyly Hughes of Mandeville, LA; and her six grandchildren: Robert Lilly, Alexandre Dor, Weston Lilly, Jeremy Dor, Ava Hughes and Gwyneth Hughes.

The family wishes to recognize the dedication and care of St. Luke’s Hospice, especially her team of Laura, Carol and Dan.

The Celebration of Jane C. Hughes’ life will be held at 10 AM, Monday, May 21, 2018 at St. Peters Episcopal Church, 110 N Warson Road, St. Louis, MO. Interment will be held later at Williamsport, PA. On June 8, 2018, a Celebration will be held in Saunderstown, RI. No visitation.
