Eugene “Gene” Smugala

Smugala, Eugene “Gene” L.

Born January 27, 1939 in Posen, IL. Passed away February 20, 2018 in St Louis, MO.

Beloved husband of Frances C. (Gebel) Smugala; dearest father of Sharon, Michael (Karen), Susan (the late Bill) Dunphy and Brian (Shelley) Smugala.

Brother to Marcella (Charlie) Jurkowski, Vincent (the late Linda) Smugala and the late Edward (Mary Lee) Smugala.

Gene was a friend to all and a coach to many. He was a man who put others first. He was an avid sports fan. He loved watching his children and grandchildren play baseball, basketball and especially soccer. He also loved the St Louis Cardinals, playing cards, polkas and his dog Mariska.

His grandchildren described him as loving, very supportive, thoughtful, concerned about others, generous, charming, witty, cheesy, goofy, helpful, gave the dog too much food and was an excellent partner in any and all board games.

Contributions in Gene’s name can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or St. Wenceslaus Parish.

A memorial mass will be held at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, 3410 Oregon Ave, St Louis, MO 63118 on Saturday, March 17 at 11:00 a.m.

In honor of Gene, please wear your Cardinal gear to the memorial service on Saturday.

    Sharon and family,

This was not the type of surprise that we like to receive. I’m sorry for your loss. It is not easy daughters to say goodbye to their fathers. You all are in my prayers.
