Tom and Pat, I wish to express my deepest sympathy to you on the passing of your brother Mike.
As I sat staring at his obituary this morning my thoughts went back many years to my childhood growing up on Theodore and Thekla. The memories came flooding back.

I remember Mike starting to learn how to play the drums!
I remember your father working on cars in the small garage in the alley and the smell of his pipe.
I remember the ash pit and the injuries that occurred playing in it. Did Mike break his arm?? Dan split open his head??
I remember riding bikes and being stung by wasps in the “Little Lot”.
I remember digging tunnels in the “Big Lot” and smoking cigarettes. We thought we were so cool!
I remember Blackie and LBJ. Our dog Joey.
I remember Danny and I eating Milk Bones dog biscuits!
I remember building new steps for the Hanson family that collapsed shortly after being completed.
I remember Mr. Jean cutting hair in your basement and the parents in your back yard visiting. A Block Party every month it was!
I remember the trips to Rockwood Resevation and Sasafrass (sic?)tea. Of copperhead snakes dancing on the rocks. Although now I do believe they were doing something other than dancing! Ah, the innocence!
I remember “booby trapping” our bikes and laying in wait for the bike thieves from the other side of highway 70! We were so tough!
I remember the dance parties my sisters would put on in our back yard!
I remember the Howks moving to Glasgow Village! I was sad.
I remember the Currans moving to Bellefontaine Neighbors. How exciting and scary all at same time! And this all happened before I finished 4th grade! I wish my children could have experienced such a time, such a sense of community!

I remember reacquainting with Mike in our later years…weekend trips to the Huzzah River, playing three card guts and drinking too many “Mickey Malts” until sunrise followed by a float trip and more “Mickey Malts”! Makes my head hurt just thinking about it!
I remember Mike playing drums in his band. For the life of me I can’t remember the name of the band.

Mike was an integral part of my early childhood. I only wish I could have had an opportunity to sit and talk and share these memories with him! Though he was only in my life for a short period of my 55 years I will always be sad when I am reminded of his passing but will always be grateful and happy that I have these memories.
