John Michael Downing


Downing, John Michael was called home on Friday, January 23,
2015. The youngest of 9 children, he is survived by his sister Sally (Glenn) Haley, Dear Uncle to 32 nieces and nephews (survived by 27) and many great nieces and nephews. He graduated from Kirkwood High School in 1953 and was a lifelong resident of Kirkwood.
He served in the US Army’s 94th Engineering Battalion from 1954 to 1956. PFC Downing was part of the post WWII rebuilding of Germany by helping repair and build roads. He was a wheeled vehicle mechanic in the Army, a skill that he developed into a lifelong career.
Mike had a lifelong love of the outdoors. He especially enjoyed quail and deer hunting with his friends, family and dogs.
In lieu of flowers and because of Mike’s love for the outdoors, memorials would be appreciated to the Missouri Department of Conservation or the charity of your choice. Service: Visitation Monday, February 2, 2015, 9:00AM until time of Memorial Mass at 9:30AM at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 243 W. Argonne, Kirkwood.
Internment at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery 11:30 AM

    Uncle Mike you will be missed by such a large and loving family. I know you and your brothers are having a beer and reminiscing about your years at 544. I send my love and that of my family.
