Gioia di vivere is the Italian equivalent of the French phrase Joie de vivre which means ‘joy of life’, a cheerful enjoyment of life; an exultation of spirit.
I can’t think of a better definition of my Aunt Dottie. In my mind’s eye, I see her as lively, sparkling, animated, cheerful and laughing. And her laugh was such a true expression of her personality. Her eyes would light up and then almost close because her great smile took up much of her face. She was a joy to be around and she brought joy to me. She was responsible for many of my happiest childhood memories. She was generous and loving. Her love of family and life was obvious and contagious. In my memory, that’s how I will always see her. I am blessed to have been her niece.
